Favourable conditions gave the Mackenzie Curling Club its first day on the ice this year on Sunday and play continued this week.

Curler and photographer George Empson said with 10-12cm of ice on Rob's Pond on club member Rob Allan's property just south of Tekapo, conditions were ideal for a round of curling.

Fourteen members turned out for the Sunday match.

FIRST DAY: Mackenzie Curling Club's first day of play for this winter on Rob's Pond here in Tekapo.

Empson said the atmosphere of curling outdoors was incomparable to playing at an indoor rink, although some members required a little "anti-freeze" to cope with the cold temperatures.

The club maintained the pond with a sweeping machine, and hoped to play against teams from Arrowtown and Windwhistle.
