Timaru Boys' High School First XV's top four fate in the Crusaders Region Schools Championships is out of their hands.

The final round is on Saturday and TBHS sits in fifth place, three points adrift of Marlborough Boys' College and four points behind St Bede's College.

TBHS face St Thomas in Christchurch and should easily account for them.

They will have to rely, however, on either St Andrew's beating St Bede's or Burnside upsetting Marlborough to go through to the Press Cup semifinals.

What is frustrating for TBHS is that they beat St Bede's and drew with Marlborough in the round robin but dropped a couple of games they shouldn't have. Also, the lack of bonus points has proved costly.

They have the same amount of wins (nine) as St Bede's but the Christchurch school has collected 11 bonus points to their five.

New coaches this season, Shane Enright and Ken Wills, have got the side to punch above their weight based on excellent defence, rather than outright attacking flair.

By contrast it has been a tough year for Roncalli College who sit in 11th place but cannot improve as they have the bye this weekend, and could in fact slip back to 12th.

They have only recorded three wins in 14 games, but on occasions have been unlucky, so will hope to improve in the Bowl final series, for sides placed 9th to 12th.
