Ashburton hosted this year's Association Croquet Handicap Tournament and saw a vast improvement in the numbers competing.
The singles were held at Waireka for the convenience of four lawns and 14 hopefuls.
After much bisque giving and taking, Brian Monckton from the Awamoa Club was the outright winner of the Taylor Rose Bowl. Waireka's Marion Marshall was runner-up and took home the Allchurch Trophy.
Marshall had only played two singles matches before this tournament, so the advantage of bisque play helped tremendously.
The doubles were played at Allenton with 10 pairs competing for the silverware.
After a nerve-racking final where the end result went to extra time, Ashbury's Jenny Macnab and her partner of one winter, Helen Cook, managed to wrestle the title from Ethel Johnston and Noeleen Lindsay from Awamoa by one golden hoop.
The winners took home the Sylvia Memorial Trays, while the runners-up were presented with the Edwina Thompson Memorial Trays.
