The South Canterbury open triples bowls are being contested tomorrow with section play being held on the Pleasant Point and Ashbury greens.
Eighteen teams from six clubs will be trying to qualify for post-section play the following Sunday.
Last year's winners Dinga Bell, Des Shea and Doug Brown will be among the favourites along with Steve Jones' Geraldine team, who won this event in 2007. Jones has a strong team with Danny Rooney and Dennis Johnston and will be the team to beat.
Waimate should be a lot stronger this year as their clubs have combined to be one of the strongest this year. Other winners of the event who are competing are Richie Kerr (2002) and Dave Hanson (1994).
Likely qualifiers are Don Johnston, Kerr, Jones, John Dirs and Hanson on the Pleasant Point green and from Ashbury Bill Cosgriff, Jim Kane, Lloyd Prattley, Bell and Gary Ford. Last year's runner-up, Laurie Shanks, will be looking for revenge after leading the final with two ends against Bell, but he has a tough draw to qualify.
