Three Timaru athletes have been named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track and Field team.
The team is traditionally named after the annual national championships, which were held for the first time in Timaru this month at the the Aorangi All-weather Track.
Walkers Lucinda Shaw (Roncalli College) and Daniel Lord (Timaru Boys' High School) along with thrower Tom Walsh (TBHS) made the team.
Shaw defended her open girls' 3km walk title in impressive style.
Lord won the 5km open track walk for the third time and smashed the longstanding record.
He paced himself brilliantly to clear out from the field and break the 20-year-old record in a time of 12m 33.77s.
Walsh was the first student to break the 20m mark in the shotput, over 4m clear of the next best with a put of 20.21m, and finished third in the discus.
Walsh and Lord were were two of three named as "Senior Athletes of the Meet" along with Mt Albert Grammar sprinter Rachel Peeters, who took out the 100m and 200m double.
The team does not compete in any events.
