Waimate trio take back-to-back titles

It was a case of back-to-back success for Mata Frankum and her Waimate team of Carol Clarke (2nd) and Dorothy Richardson (lead) in taking out the South Canterbury Bowling Centre's triples champion of champions event for the second year running.
Teams taking part in the event at the centre's green came from Timaru, West End, Pleasant Point, Ashbury, Timaru Town and Country Club, Aorangi, Fairlie, Waimate, Temuka, Geraldine and Kia Toa.
Each team had already won their own club triples championship.
Clubs with byes in the first round were Fairlie, Waimate, Temuka, Geraldine and Kia Toa.
In the first round West End started slowly against Timaru until the 13th end when they drew 12-12 all.
Timaru advanced quickly to 18 but West End came back at them and on the 18th end it was 18-all.
The extra end saw West End holding four shots until skip Pam Millar drew the perfect shot with her last bowl to take the game.
Pleasant Point lost to Ashbury, 14-23, and TTCC rolled over Aorangi, 29-6, in a fine display of bowling.
The second round saw a narrow victory to Waimate over Fairlie.
Waimate were down 11-0 by the ninth end but they bounced back with a four on the next end, gradually pulling back the score to win by one shot.
Geraldine started well against Temuka to be 11-1 up, but Temuka came back strongly scoring on six of the last seven ends to win 16-14.
Asbury and TTCC also had a close encounter with the score see-sawing, finally ending with TTCC winning 16-15
The semifinals saw two teams stand out – TTCC beat Kia Toa well at 24-5 and Waimate beat Temuka 27-10
The final was a tight affair between Waimate and the TTCC team of Cathy Richards, Shirley Whyte and Mary Lemon.
Waimate led 16-9 by the 14th end. From then on TTCC could only manage one more shot and Waimate came out the winners, 19-10.
