South Canterbury athletes won 20 titles at the Canterbury Track and Field Championships last weekend at QEII Stadium in Christchurch.
Leading the charge were Nicola Mackle and Tom Walsh who won their first senior titles. Mackle won the senior women's high jump with a leap of 1.66 metres and Walsh won the senior men's shot put, setting a Canterbury record of 16.28m.
Also in the senior men's grade, Daniel Laws won the 110m hurdles in 17.55 seconds.
In the women's 16 grade, Lauren Nicol retained her 100m title in 12.82s, after qualifying fastest in the heats in 12.76s, and also retained her 400m title in 60.25s. Leanne McKenzie won the women's 16 high jump with a personal best of 1.69m and Rebecca Hodgson won the women's 16 hammer throw with 45.38m.
In the same grade Lucinda Shaw won the 3000m track walk in a personal best time of 15min 35.48sec, a personal best by 23 seconds, and Caitlin Henderson achieved a personal best throw of 35.52m in winning the women's 16 javelin.
In the women's 19 grade, Nicola Mackle won the long jump (5.14m) and discus (27.78m), Leanne McKenzie won the high jump (1.69m, a personal best), and Rebecca Hodgson won the hammer throw with a Canterbury record of 46.47m.
In the men's 16 grade, Brett Clifford led the charge in taking out three titles – 800m (2:01.63), 1500m (4:19.26) and 3000m, with Michael Dewar winning the hammer with 41.46m (personal best).
In the men's 19 grade, Tom Walsh won the shot put (17.92m), Daniel Laws won the 3000m track walk (13:36.86) and Michael Dewar the hammer (35.74m). Herald correspondent
