Archbold proves too strong in final sprint

James Archbold proved too strong in the sprint to win the St Andrews Cycling Club's 46-kilometre Rayner Cup race last weekend.
The race began from St Andrews and made its way past the Bluecliffs school up the steep climb on Gordons Valley Rd and return. Powerful riding from the 15-minute bunch saw them sweep up the five groups ahead of them.
Recent winner James Archbold rode with this group, along with Nicole Begg, Bill Gibb, James Valentine, Grant Cook and Marty Cuttle. With added firepower from Laurie Darcy, Geoff Lienert and Dave Bosomworth from the bunch three minutes ahead of them, they were able to take out the major honours at the finish.
Archbold proved too strong in the sprint, winning from Darcy and Begg. In fourth was Gibb from Valentine, Lienert and Bosomworth. Lone scratch rider Reon Park crossed the half-minute handicap mark to the break riders and this group finished behind the leaders, with Park fastest from Jeff Best and Glenn Gould.
