Timaru Boys' High is looking to make an impact at their first national volleyball championships in Palmerston North.
Next week's tournament will see TBHS competing with more than 100 other teams from high schools across the country.
Team manager Tony Bunting said the sport had seen a resurgence at the school in recent years, and they were keen to show their skills at a national level.
"Having amazing coaching from Rene Kempf helps, and getting some passionate parents behind it is great," he said.
"We have some really talented players here."
Bunting said he hoped the team would finish in the top half of the competition this year, but admitted to having an eye on the future.
"This is definitely a development squad because a lot of them are going to go again next year."
The 12-strong squad warmed up for the tournament by coming first and second in the Aoraki Secondary School's Volleyball championships yesterday.
The TBHS A team beat TBHS B 25-21, 25-15 in a competitive match, which saw all 12 players compete for either team.
The team heads to the nationals tomorrow.
