The South Canterbury Open pathway singles bowls tournament gets underway this weekend at the Temuka and West End Bowling Clubs.
This year has one of the strongest fields for the tournament because it no longer clashes with the Burnside Pairs in Christchurch.
South Canterbury's top bowlers – Sean O'Neill, Barrie Andrews and Steve Jones – are all available and will provide stiff competition for last year's winner, Jim Vevers. Vevers already has two championships to his credit this season and is in top form.
O'Neill and Dan Rooney, who are accomplished singles players in South Canterbury, will be the frontrunners for the title.
O'Neill has won eight South Canterbury singles titles while Rooney has won six.
Out of the 46-strong field there are 12 former South Canterbury singles champions in Jones, Howard Smith, Richie Kerr, Rooney, O'Neill, Vevers, Merv Davey, Noel Williams, Andrews, Merv Holland, Gary Francis and Scott Fisher.
One of them is likely to add another title to their credentials at the Temuka Bowling Club tomorrow night.
Other players looking for their first title and in good form are Jim Kane, Wayne Youngman, and Russell Botting. A dark horse in the field could be part-time bowler Nigel Dewe.
After the final the South Canterbury selectors Kerr and Francis will name their Inter-centre Sevens team to play in zone six final in Alexandra next month.
