Kiwi quad makes semifinal
A semifinal beckons for Timaru Rowing Club's Russell and Cameron Crampton in the junior men's quadruple sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Bulgaria.
The identical Crampton twins, along with Corey McCaffrey and Mitchell MacKenzie-Mol, of Marlborough, finished second to Germany in their quarterfinal to qualify.
The Dan Kelly-coached Kiwis clocked 6min 0.26sec for the 2000m in their quarterfinal, two seconds behind the winners.
Their time was a two-second improvement on their heat but they will need to find more speed again, after eight boats went quicker than them in the quarterfinals. Italy were the fastest qualifiers for the semis with an impressive 5min 52.96sec.
The Kiwis face defending champions Romania, Russia, Croatia, Great Britain and the Netherlands in their semifinal.
