University of Otago exchange student Jesse Gibbs just missed the podium in the biggest relay in the world, the Hood to Coast Relay in Oregon.
The 20-year-old was part of a 12-man relay team which was made up mainly of runners connected with the Ariki Club in Dunedin.
Dubbed "the mother of all relays", it comprises 36 legs run over 320km.
Gibbs' team finished fourth of the 1070 teams competing, in 18 hours, 35 minutes and 45 seconds, over an hour behind a team from Japan.
The former Mountainview High School student's next race is his main event for the year, the Toronto marathon in October.
