The Timaru Boys' High School second XI hockey team started their Coaches Cup campaign with two wins, in Gore, yesterday.
They downed a combined Mountainview High School/Geraldine team 4-0 and then defeated Logan Park, from Dunedin, 4-1
TBHS passed well during their first match, but good defence was keeping them off the score sheet.
Some great short passing and an illustration of fine skill saw Jack Leslie score the opening goal. Luke Cullen did a fantastic job defensively for TBHS in the first half.
TBHS waited patiently during the second half and the rewards came their way.
Goalie Hamish Dewar made some good saves and Graison Dale was staunch on defence.
Ethan Mitchell was the recipient of a nice pass from Ben O'Connor who scored the second goal. Mitchell decided that one was not enough and, with almost a repeat performance, he scored another moments later.
Tom Johnstone flicked the ball for an almost certain goal when Sam Early got the last touch to secure a comfortable win.
Then a great run down the baseline by Johnstone who passed the ball back up to Cameron Stevenson who was in a perfect position to slot the ball home for the opening goal against Logan Park.
Late in the first half, TBHS were awarded a penalty corner. Ben O'Connor dragged the ball superbly through to Dale who powered it straight between the goalie's pads to double the advantage.
The second half started with another period of defence, but the young TBHS side defended well.
A good run from O'Connor from half way resulted in a quick ball across to Leslie who slotted it home.
The final goal for TBHS came from a long corner where the ball passed through several players before finding the stick of Mitchell.
