A gutsy second half performance by Timaru Boys' High School was not enough to secure them a place in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sevens Finals.
TBHS made the qualifying final against Christchurch Boys' High School but found themselves down 26-0 before mounting a comeback to close the gap to 26-19 in a fast and physical game.
Lead by South Canterbury senior sevens reps Tyrone Hill, George Lott and Tom Shelker TBHS almost snared an equalising try to send the game into extra golden point time against the bigger Christchurch side.
The efforts of the hard working forwards Hill , Josh Westland, Bryce Shearer, Sukhi Singh-Bolina and Jacob Lightfoot allowed the backs to get back into the game and nearly cause a huge upset.
For TBHS Hill, Shelker and William Keenan scored tries.
Earlier in the tournament TBHS beat defending champions Shirley Boys High School 19-10 in a bruising encounter.
They then beat Aranui High School 30-0 with Henry Chamberlain showing real speed in an outstanding performance.
In the semifinal against St Thomas, TBHS prevailed in golden point extra time, 14-7, with a try to Hill after Cain Tweddie-Cunningham scored the first.
Colts under-15 captain Marc Rooney was promoted in to the side and made captain, and he responded with a superb tournament.
