Aorangi finishes tournament on high note
The Aorangi men's interprovincial team have finished their national tournament on a positive note with a 4-1 win over Hawke's Bay at the Otago Golf Club yesterday.
Aorangi finishes with two wins from six, in 11th place out of 14 teams. It was a vast improvement on last year when they went home winless.
Team manager Grant Williams said the team was satisfied with the outcome, which included a surprise win over Waikato and two narrow losses to Auckland and Wellington.
"We're all happy with how it went, considering we're such a young team.
"At the start of the week I would have said we achieved our goal, but we're also happy with the games we won.
"To win 13 games overall and push Auckland and Wellington to 3-2 was a pretty good outcome," Williams said.
No 2 Jordan Green and No 4 Damian Rodgers both won four of their six matches for the week and No 1 Cameron Grant had a 50 per cent success rate.
Rodgers survived a see-saw affair with Madison Noakes to win 1-up.
Rodgers saw his three-hole lead cut to one by the midway point and then had to battle from a hole behind with three to play to secure the win.
Williams said he had shown improvement from 12 months ago.
"Last year he lost four of his matches on the last hole and this year he has turned it around to win four like that."
Green defeated Russell Mitchell 4 and 3, while Grant won by the same margin over Richard Squire.
No 3 Garth Simpson won his first game of the week after fighting back from 3 down after five holes to win 1-up over Max Gill.
Aorangi No 5 George Wardell lost 5 and 4 to Carlos Tawera.
