Tough start for cricket team

The South Canterbury year 7 and 8 cricket team started their Canterbury District's tournament with a 45-run loss to Christchurch Metro Fleming in a 40-over match yesterday.

South Canterbury won the toss and chose to field. They restricted the home team to 161 for nine, but could only manage 116 all out in reply.

Ben Stayt was the pick of the South Canterbury bowlers as he took three for 25, while Todd Phillips and Daniel Fitzgerald each took two wickets.

The largest contributor to the South Canterbury run chase were 44 extras. Opener Hamish Stowell made 15, while Stayt and Phillips made 14 and 13, respectively.

South Canterbury will face Country North today.
