Tekapo is gearing up for a relay-style mountain bike competition being held in the Regional Pine Forest park to the east of the township next month

The Tekapo 10 Mountain bike race is a new event where small teams have 10 hours to complete as many laps of the 6.5km course as possible.

The race starts at 9am.

Each team has a transition area beneath the trees that racers ride their way through. Teams are encouraged to bring shelter, seating and warmup bikes.

The event is a fundraiser for the Mackenzie College Adventure Race Team and medals are be awarded for podium placings for men and woman solo, teams and under-19 teams. The college team has successfully qualified for the New Zealand finals of the Hillary Challenge Adventure Race, to be held at Tongariro in May.

The races have been based on the highly successful 12-hour format used at Naseby, McLeans Island and, more recently, near Wanaka and Queenstown.
