Shane Brookland won the bunch sprint at the Timaru Cycling Club race to lift the Ideal Milkbar Trophy.

The 50km course around the roads of Hilton in hot conditions tested the 25 riders who rolled up to the start line.

The riders were in six bunches and the limit riders, Gail Burtenshaw, Caroline West, and Rebecca Brooks, worked well together and proved difficult to pull in.

Behind them the break bunch of Andrew Mitchell, Ian Kirkman, Sam Gray, Peter Keller, and Hamish MacDonald were making inroads into the riders in front.

This bunch gained in size and speed, making it difficult for the scratch riders.

The large bunch caught the limit bunch only 2km from the finish line, and settled in for the sprint.

Brookland then showed he still has his sprinting ability, beating Glenn Marshall and MacDonald.

In the race for fastest time, Glenn Gould finished ahead of Brett Olsen and Jeff Best.
