It has taken 25 years but Timaru yachtsman Bill Frater has finally won the annual Donald Hay Classic on Lake Wakatipu.

Frater's long wait finished in style at the weekend and was a double celebration. Not only did he skipper Freak Brothers to line honours, he was also first on handicap, giving him a clean sweep of the silverware.

Frater put his success down to simply "just going the right way". "I was pretty happy to win as I haven't missed many."

The Queenstown to Kingston race was held for the 34th time and attracted 25 competitors.

Frater said conditions were reasonable, which also helped. The 6.5m Elliot trailer-sailor took 4hr 48min to compete the course. Frater co-owns the boat with his tactician Wayne Morgan.

The two other crew to share in the success were forward-hand Robert Ley and apprentice Paul Wilkins, both of Timaru.
