A stoic half century from Andrew Buckingham and four wickets from left arm spinner Sam Carlaw gave South Canterbury an unlikely edge after day one of its Hawke Cup cricket match against Otago Country today.

South Canterbury posted 193 all out thanks to Buckingham's 52 and 30 each from debutante Nathan McNicol and Waimate's Glen Drake.

In reply, Otago Country were 105 for six at stumps with Carlaw taking four wickets to match the effort of visiting seamer Sam Blakely.

Otago Country wicket keeper Jarred Andrews is holding the visitors'  first innings together with an unbeaten 26 after they had lost six wickets for 77 runs in the last session of the day.
