Maungati sixth hole runs in the Arras family
John Arras has ticked off every golfer's dream of a hole in one - although he didn't quite see it.
Mr Arras, 81, of Timaru, has been perfecting his swing for nearly 40 years and last Saturday on the sixth hole at Maungati Golf Club he pulled off a hole in one.
"It was just one of those flukey shots. I can't see the ball from a certain distance but everyone else saw the ball drop in."
He sent a text to his son Ross who has also had a hole in one at the sixth.
"I was cooking my tea and he rang to congratulate me."
Mr Arras has been playing golf since the late 1970s.
"I'm 81 so it's compulsory exercise for me. I try to get out and play twice a week. I don't think about it [getting a hole in one] too much, but when you are on a par three you strive to get a close one."
