Both South Canterbury pairs who made the last 16 of the New Zealand bowls championships were eliminated in the first game in Dunedin yesterday morning.
West End's Barrie Andrews, who was playing with Alexandra's Pat Houlahan, went down 17-11 to the composite Dunedin duo of John Cross and Geoff Wilson.
Cross had ended the hopes of Richie Kerr and Jim Vevers (Kia Toa) 18-17 in the first round of post section on Tuesday.
The other pair to make the last 16 was the Timaru Town and Country duo of Shane Chisnall, a fourth year player, and the vastly experienced Russell Botting. They were beaten 19-9 by Tony Grantham. That followed three fine wins on Tuesday, with Peter Hodson (Stoke), the singles champion of two years ago, among their scalps.
In the women's singles on Tuesday, Janice Styles (Kia Toa) opened with a 21-12 win over Gill Swale (Te Rangi) but was then thrashed 21-3 by Clare McCaul (Silverstream). Mata Frankum (Kia Toa) lost her first game 21-11 to Sherrie Cottle (Canterbury).
