Tom Walsh has claimed a brilliant bronze medal on day one of the World Indoor Championships in Poland.
Walsh performed outstandingly in his first major championship event after going into the shot put qualifying competition ranked 17th out of the 21 athletes.
The New Zealand record holder from Timaru, who qualified sixth, started well with 20.18, then followed up with 20.08 to lie in 8th place after the second round.
He then unleashed a big 20.41 with his third attempt to lift two places.

In the final Walsh started with a pair of no throws before launching an impressive series - 20.12, 20.46, 20.88 and then, finally, 21.26 to claim bronze, shattering his own New Zealand record.
