Timaru Boys' High School rowers faced a challenging regatta at Lake Hood with mixed results at the weekend.

The under-17 four of Ben Morgan, Billy Smith, Cameron Crampton and Russell Crampton, with cox Jack Sinclair, finished second in the final, after winning their heat.

It was a good result as it was the first time the crew had raced together.

Another new combination of Ethan Borcovsky and Tom Merrilees went up an age-group to under-18 and finished third.

The under-17 quad of Morgan, Smith, Borcovsky and Merrilees, after coming second in their heat, were off their best in finishing fourth in the final.

Morgan completed a busy weekend by finishing third in the under-17 single, a very good result considering he has not spent much time in the boat recently.

The under-15 and 16 crews of the two Cramptons, Peter Newman, Todd McIsaac and Matt Merrilees, toiled hard all weekend but were hampered by the loss of a crewmate to illness.

In the under-15 grade Newman and McIsaac faced eight races each over the two days, a total of 16km of racing, a task they accomplished well.

The result gives the TBHS crews plenty to work on in the next few weeks before Maadi Cup at Lake Ruataniwha at the end of March.
