The 2010 Junior Quadrangular Tennis Tournament was held in Timaru and featured the top young players from South Canterbury, North Otago, Otago and Southland who competed for overall titles in both the 10 and 12-year age groups.
The South Canterbury 10-year-old boys team had good wins over North Otago and Southland, taking both rubbers 6-0. In the decider against Otago the tie ended 3-all with Otago taking the rubber 37-33 on countback. Brad Cvitanich, playing in his first representative fixture, won all his matches and was awarded the "most valuable player" in the 10s.
The South Canterbury 10-year-old girls combination showed their lack of experience at this level but despite finishing fourth will benefit from the match play. Georgia Woodley was awarded their MVP.
The South Canterbury 12-year-old girls' team had comfortable 6-0 wins over North Otago and Otago. In the decider against Southland Amelia Race came from a set down to win a tight match over Emma Hopcroft 6-7, 6-4, 10-6, and helped South Canterbury to a vital 4-2 victory and the title. Race and Rebecca Gill were standouts for South Canterbury with both girls going through the weekend unbeaten.
The South Canterbury 12-year-old boys' team were easy winners over North Otago and Southland but in the decider against Otago, the boys struggled against their southern opponents going behind 5-0. Although they could not win the boys' title, a victory by Sam Lane in the final match was enough for the South Canterbury team to win the coveted Southern Region Combined title that includes both the boys and girls teams' results. Lane did not disappoint with a dominant 6-2 6-1 victory over Paddy Ou to secure the trophy. Jack Deeley was named most valuable player. Herald correspondent
