Gary Lawson is still hungry for world championship success.

The two-time world champion lawn bowler is in Timaru this weekend playing in the West End Classic.

The 2008 men's pairs and fours world champion said he wanted to represent New Zealand again and defend his world championships in 2012, despite his past issues with Bowls New Zealand.

"I'm a firm believer in trying to defend something that you have won and that's what I intend to do."

Lawson came to Timaru having played only a handful of tournaments this year, but said he was looking forward to the relaxed atmosphere of the event.

"This is always a great tournament and it's great to come down here and support the game in the region.

"I've come down here for a relaxing weekend with mates and to catch up with friends, but my competitive nature also means I want to win it. I would say the green [at West End] is one of the best in the country."

Lawson said playing less bowls so far this year had made him wonder if he would have the motivation to keep playing at a high level.

"Sometimes I think that [the motivation] is gone, but when I start playing again, the passion always comes back.

"I think `Why give up?' I'm playing the best I ever have, and I'll give it up when it suits me.

"I still feel I am at the top of my game and can beat anyone in the world."

The tournament will finish on Sunday.
