The All Whites will do it tough at next year's World Cup after drawing Italy, top South American side Paraguay and Slovakia, one of the strongest European qualifiers.

The glittering draw ceremony in the Cape Town Convention Cenre handed New Zealand a tough group, even though Paraguay and Slovakia may not be household names down under.

Assistant-coach Brian Turner said that the group would be far from easy but that his side had gained great confidence from the narrow defeat against the Italians in a friendly ahead of the 2009 Confederations Cup.

New Zealand lost 3-4 after leading the match on three different occasions. "Italy won the game after they brought on all the big guns but we mainly lost because of personal mistakes," Turner told a massive posse of Italian scribes.

It was the only encounter between the two countries.

The All Whites will open their campaign against Slovakia in Rustenburg on June 15, the same venue where they played two matches in the Confederations Cup in June.

Slovakia won their group which also included Slovenia, Poland and Northern Ireland and are currently No.34 in the world.

Liverpool central defender Martin Skrtel is the star player in the Slovakian squad which also includes Napoli's Marek Hamsik.

New Zealand's second game will be against Italy in Nelspruit on June 20 and the third group match against Paraguay will be in another north-eastern venue, Polokwane, on June 24.

Paraguay finished third in the South American group after their best qualifying campaign in history.

Paraguay is currently ranked No.30 in the world and the team's best known player is Ryan Nelsen's former Blackburn team-mate Roque Santa Cruz.

It will be Paraguay's eighth appearance at the World Cup.

Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino admitted that he had seen Italy and Slovakia in action, but would have to do a bit of homework on New Zealand.

The All Whites played Paraguay once before in 1995, losing 2-3 in Santiago de Chile.

In other groups, Australia struck a very tough draw against Germany,  Serbia and Ghana, while England has a seemingly easier route to the second round, playing against the United States, Algeria and Slovenia.

Hosts South Africa will open the World Cup on June 1 against Mexico, but will struggle to get past the first round as it also faces France and Uruguay.

Group G may become the 'Group of Death' with giants Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast pooled with the unknown quantity of North Korea.

A worldwide audience of 200 million had to wait for nearly an hour before Springbok captain John Smit started pulling the first balls out of the pots.

The finely choreographed television performance started on top of the famous Table Mountain basking in the sun of a perfect Cape Town summer's night before moving inside the Convention Centre where 3000 guests were treated to a feast of football and African culture.

The show was co-hosted by Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron, and was attended by a who's who from the world of football, entertainment and politics, including football legends Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Eusebio, Luis Figo, Roger Milla, David Beckham, Ruud Gullit and Nobel Prize winners Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former South African leader FW de Klerk.

Beckham assisted in the draw along with Ethiopian distance-runner Haile Gebrselassie, cricketer Maykaya Ntini and footballers Matthew Booth and Simphiwe Dludlu.

After the draw the street parties which had been building up all day continued into the Cape Town night.

Book your return tickets now 'All Whites' you will get a better deal.

Just hope they keep televising the rest of the World Cup, for all the other nationalalities in this country. But I bet the viewing stops as soon as New Zealand are out and its replaced by 4 channels of Rugby again !!

All the way ENGLAND. Good luck.

BEN #83 you must be joking or on some really great drugs. NZ will get a hiding in every game. We will score one goal at best and probably have about 15 put past us. We have at least 7 A-League players in our team (the AUSTRALIAN coach even thinks that league is a joke and only picks players from it when he is forced too). Sorry NZ but stop living in your little bubble and realise that just because we beat some easy (and i mean really easy) teams and scrapped into the world cup doesn't mean we are going to do any good. NZ will finish last in our pool with the worst stats in the tournament.

Call me insane but I have a sneaky suspicion NZ will top the group, Italy always get upset in pool play, they just scraped through last WC (and NZ lost 3-2 against them in a very close game last game), Paraguay are a great team at home but struggle away, also their captain and star Salvador Cabanas was recently shot in Mexico and will not play, (also Roque Santa Cruz is not match fit, he's been on the bench all season whilst Bellamy, Adebayor, Robinho and Tevez compete with him for the Man City striking spots). As for Slovakia, are you kidding, this side is rubbish, I pick us to beat them comfortably. So there you have it folks All Whites to top Group F. Don't say you weren't warned!

#76 No you are out of touch and missing the point completely - 'freely on national television' ?! Stick to your netball then.

go go the All Whites I am not a soccer fan but did watch part of the game My only gripe...as exciting as the 2 games were hopefully we wont have to wait 3 hours for 1 goal..A bit like one try in a Rugby international and a whole lot of near misses Cheers

J Alve .."I agree, NZ don't stand a chance, they don't deserve to be there! Is a shame GOOD teams like Ireland etc missed out."

Good!? Was that the same Ireland that lost by 3 goals to Australia?

View from the other side of the planet:

1. Italy 2. Paraguay 3. Slovakia (hopefully 2nd) 4. New Zealand

Anyway, GOOD LUCK All Whites, but not in the opener of course:-)

thats one of the best possible draws.... on a group by group comparison group f has the lowest combined world rankings.... only way it could of been better is if south africa or north korea was drawn with us. Otherwise I think it's a decent draw for nz and we at the least might be able to pull of an upset of either Paraguay or Slovakia.

IRONYHATER   #76   12:21 am Dec 06 2009

NZ will get massacred by all of these teams. It will be a pleasure to watch, after keeping the ball out of play for 35 minutes in the game against Bahrain. One can only hope that they will lose as narrowly as they qualified, in much the same fashion - by not being allowed to play because of injury faking and stalling with putting the ball back into play.

However, there is a down side to the trashing we will get. That down side is the fact that we will not get to see any games where NZ doesn't play, freely on national television. Here in NZ, we only give importance to things we are "good" at. So any games where NZ doesn't play are not important. Same thing is confirmed with rugby world cup ticket pricing. One more chance to enjoy what will only come as a balancing act against the NZ attitude.

I am right and you know it!
