Ways to keep kids entertained in the car

Here are ten classic ways to keep kids from asking "Are we there yet?"

* Try "I spy . . .", counting different-coloured cars, or going through the alphabet by spotting number plates starting with the relevant letter.

* Tell stories and encourage your kids to make up their own.

* CDs. Get your Wiggles, Miley Cyrus or Hi-5 discs out for a singalong. Some kids' stories are a good idea too.

* Take favourite toys, pillow and a blanket to make kids as comfortable as possible.

* Pack their favourite books to read or colour-in - if they're not prone to car-sickness. And if they do get car sick, take a container with a lid and lots of wet wipes.

* Snacks and drinks. Make sure you have apples, oranges, raisins, biscuits and water. No sugar!

* DVD movies on a portable player. If it is a long drive, popping in their favourite DVD should keep them entertained, and quiet, for a little while at least.

* Stop often, preferably at a playground, so the kids can burn off some of that excess energy before you carry on.

* Have a family spelling bee.

* Have a travel scavenger hunt. List the objects they have to look out for on the way, such as a windmill, brown cow etc. Or give them a book of maps to study and tell them where you will be next and when, so they can be involved in the trip.
