Air France-KLM have denied media reports that it planned an extra charge for overweight passengers if they were unable to fit into a single seat.

Instead, the national carrier said that from February 1 overweight passengers who had freely chosen to buy an extra seat for comfort would get their money back on flights that were not fully booked.

"Contrary to reports in the press this morning, Air France is not planning to force corpulent passengers to pay for a second seat," the statement said.

Air France said that since 2005 it had offered overweight passengers an option to buy a second seat at a 25 percent discount.

"It is not an obligation; we suggest to such passengers they buy a second seat for their own comfort and in order to be sure the seats are adapted to their needs. If the plane is not full, they can get a refund," Air France spokesman Jean-Pierre Lefebvre said.

Several newspapers had reported that obese passengers flying Air France-KLM would have to pay 75 per cent of the cost of a second seat on top of the full price for the first seat, and that the measure was introduced for safety reasons.

Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have a policy where "oversize" people need to buy a second seat and can claim a refund if the plane is not full. This followed complaints from adjacent passengers.

In 2006 Air France was sued by a French passenger after the airline told him he was too big to fit in one seat and would have to buy an additional seat if he wanted to fly from New Delhi to Paris.

The passenger, who sued on the ground he was deeply humiliated by the situation because he was measured in a public area of the airport, won the case.

i THINK THAT IT SHOULD BE UP TO THE AIRLINE TO CREATE BIGGER SEATS TO ACCOMODATE LARGER PASSENGERS, ITS NOT FAIR ON THE OVER WEIGHT PERSON AND NOT FAIR ON THE OTHER PASSENGERS WHO HAVE TO SQUASH IN NEXT TO THEM. SO BIGGER SEATS WOULD BE PERFECT

lol @ 70. I trust you're trolling. if not then why not just pig out on lettuce or celery?

I think they should also charge extra for people with kids, as they inconvenience the hell out of me, as well as people who talk loudly, snore, smell, people who continually bang the seat in front of them, put their seat back whilst I'm eating behind them, ugly people (they inconvenience me visually)...

Hmmm the problem is I probably fit into a few of those categories...

its so sad the enthusiasm everyone is expressing in insulting "fatties". im not overweight, but i know many people who are and i doubt most believe they are overweight due to "genetics" just as many of them dont actually "eat like pigs" (so eloquent Kiki#10). if airlines implimented a standardised policy of offering a second seat at 1/2 price for people of larger proportions- and this includes height as much as "fattness", the issue would be resolved pretty smoothly. unfortunately, they muck around putting suggestions in the media opening the floodgates and giving all these bitter and ignorant people a chance to be rude about others less fortunate than them. shame on you guys

It is simply unreasonable to expect a normal sized passenger to tolerate another person spilling over into their seat, and the resulting invasion of personal space.

I was sat next to an obese person from Milan to Singapore and then to Auckland. I was hot squashed, and uncomfortable the whole way. I could feel the other persons digestive system rumble. And they were hot and sweaty and gassy - I could feel that too. 25 hour nightmare

it's worse when you sit next to a fat person with one seat when they put the tray table down.

Fat, thin, tall, short, loud, quiet, smelly good, smelly bad, ugly, pretty, rich, poor, white, black, brown, yellow, smart, stupid, mean, nice, happy, sad, where will it end, why should it start. You play your money you take your chances with the masses, if you don’t like the odds you fly first class. It’s all about money tip to tail and it really is that simple.

Very simple logic is you pay more for parcels when posting it, so why not people?I do agree they should pay more if they "roll" over or inconveniece me when flying and Megans wieght and baggage issue is interesting and a valid point though i don't want them charging larger people for excess weight unless it's for 2 seats else all they do is make more cash and i'm still inconvenieced! On another note, people with braod shoulders or are tall are inconvenieced also, but thats just bad luck as you're the minority. Cars, houses, seats .........are built for the masses though surely tall people can get fire exit seats for leg room.

Well im 6'4 105kgs 11% BF. I have very broad shoulders and back and those airline seats seem way to small for me, i seem to 'spill' over into other seats as well, should I be paying excess as well?
