The Campable websitecan put visitors like Franzi Despeyroux and Fabrice Despeyrouxi in touch with a Kiwis who are happy to host them on their land.

A new website is making it easy for Kiwis to rent out a space on their property to campervan tourists.

Warwick Beauchamp, founder of Campable.com, said the concept was similar to Airbnb but much easier to run.

"The cool thing with Campable is you've got no cleaning, vacuuming or washing of sheets to do after they leave," he said.

Ward hasn't had any bookings yet, but she looks forward to welcoming her first visitor.

"Half the fun is getting to meet people from all over the world," she said.

Regardless of the Taupo District Council's decision on freedom camping in public areas, every private property owner was entitled to host one campervan on their own land, Beauchamp said.

"I'd like to see people grasping the idea that something that has been a problem in the district can actually be a real positive," he said.

"A person in town could put their driveway on Campable – they could charge $20 [per night].  They could have a wine on the deck with their guests if they wanted to, or they could just leave them to themselves."

The arrangement gave campervan tourists peace of mind, he said.

"A lot of freedom campers don't want to park in a public place and wonder if someone's going to knock on their window in the morning."

Hosts were unlikely to get rich from the service, but they might meet some interesting people, Beauchamp said.

"The Taupo community could have a lot of fun and solve the freedom camping problem while making a little bit of extra cash," he said.
