There’s no gasping when you enter the sea up here: 28 degrees means it’s almost bath-warm. The gasps come when you see what’s sharing the water with you. I was enchanted by the variety of colourful fish when I was snorkelling in the lagoon; but now we’re outside it, I’m peering eagerly into the blue all around me, waiting to see the biggest fish in the world. I’m not afraid, because the whale shark is a filter feeder, but when I see first of all white spots materialising in the water, and then the vast blue shape of the fish itself, I’m totally thrilled. Its head is blunt, the mouth huge, the swirls of spots unique and lovely, the tail long and leisurely - but that’s an illusion, the fish is so big, 7 metres, that it’s powering through the water and, all too soon, it’s gone. But never forgotten.
