Self-proclaimed genuine Kiwi farmers have put their passion about people to the test by re-opening a luxury lodge.

John and Pauline Trotter, who previously owned high country station Kaiwarua near Waimate have taken on a change of pace and scenery in the form of Lime Tree Lodge at Wanaka.

They owned the high country station for 10 years which Pauline said were wonderful days but very exhausting, farming the mountains and steep hillsides.

"Often the places we spotted stock (cattle, sheep and deer) were too steep for the horses so you would have to leave them and hope that they would still be there when you came back.

"We would then have to make our own way around some pretty steep faces and whistle up the dogs to have what is called ‘a bark-up' to get the stock moving," Pauline said.

The couple have been involved in tourism all their lives and when they moved to Kaiwarua Station, they ventured into the high end of tourism.

"We offered fly-fishing and 4WD adventures for our guests. John and I both really enjoyed meeting the wonderful people we had to stay."

The couple are dab hands at running farms and are very passionate about people and they bring their experience and passion together with the running of Lime Tree Lodge.

"We want people to have a genuine, positive Kiwi experience and our lodge should appeal to everyone. Wanaka is untapped paradise and the beauty of the surroundings is stunning.

"The colours in autumn and summer provide a great backdrop."

The lodge, with views of the Southern Alps, is named after an avenue of tilea cordata lime trees and is set on a 4.046 hectare property outside Wanaka, complete with an on-site helipad.

The lodge, which also has a petanque court, croquet lawn, pitch-and-putt golf course and swimming pool officially re-opened this week.
