Capital pops up in Akld
It’s wet, windy and cold and no, it’s not Wellington – but the capital is in Auckland.
Sheltering inside a clutch of giant silos once used to hold cement, 13 Wellington “establishments” are selling their wares to an invited audience of Aucklanders for the next two days.
Positively Wellington Tourism’s $185,000 promotion has crowded some of the capital’s restaurants, bars, brewers and food shops into Silo 6 on Auckland’s waterfront.
“The Capital Pop-Up City” is an invitation-only event for 350 Aucklanders – some of whom pleaded for an invitation – who may persuade more Aucklanders to think of Wellington as a destination.
“Wellington is New Zealand’s favourite weekend getaway,” says Sarah Meikle of PWT.
It’s a compact city with a wide variety of food and attractions beyond big events.
“We are not a one-trick pony…. Wellington is New Zealand’s culinary destination.”
Pop-Up has run in Melbourne and Sydney and this is the first time they’ve tried it on a New Zealand city.
One of the participants, Stephen Logan, says while the participants were mostly competitors, they’re all really proud of Wellington.
“Once you are in Wellington, its easy to get around, it’s almost like a village and you can say hello to people,” he said.
Auckland, he said, was a place where “everything is big.”
Joining with rivals in the promotion did not lessen the competition later.
“It’s Wellington first; and then we can compete on the street.”
Wellington, with a rich hinterland of fine produce, had become passionate about food.
“It’s very competitive in Wellington… You have to be pretty good to survive….
“Wellington runs on passion and talent, people are skilled at what they do.”
As the wind and rain whipped around the silos, PWT was bringing in the gas heaters – Aucklanders can be a bit touchy about the cold.
