We hit the streets of Queenstown and Auckland to find out what tourist thought of our friendly cities.

Queenstown has been named the third friendliest city in the world and Auckland ninth, according to Condé Nast Traveler magazine.

New Zealand was the only country to have two cities feature in the top 10 of the US publication's annual readers' survey.

Auckland was last year ranked equal first friendliest city with Melbourne, however both were outdone by Sydney in this year's results.

"You can't NOT have a good time in Queenstown," one reader noted in the survey of world's friendliest places.

Irish capital Dublin was second.

It's the third year the magazine has done the survey and the third time New Zealand cities have been rated among the world's friendliest spots to visit.

Queenstown was listed as fourth friendliest city in 2013 and improved to third this year.

It was praised by tourists for its friendly locals, great bar scene and good people watching.

"You can't NOT have a good time in Queenstown," one reader noted.

Another said its adventure tourism offered "50 ways to kill yourself every day", while one warned people to save up before visiting, saying it was "a bucket list city, but you'll need a bucket of money".

Auckland has been voted the ninth friendliest city in the world, losing its number one spot from 2014.

Auckland's highlights, according to readers, was the Chinese Lantern Festival and the "funky and shabby chic" of Devonport, on the North Shore.

The description of Auckland said that "overall most agreed there were absolutely wonderful people everywhere"

A summary of top-ranked Sydney raved that "all in all, there's simply nothing to not like".

At the other end of the scale Caracas, Venezuela, was voted to be the world's unfriendliest city.

One reader lamented that "Caracas used to be a great place, friendly and cosmopolitan, but in the last decade it's taken a turn for the worse with rampant crime, a scarcity of basic necessities, and a poor quality of life".
