Eichardt's Private Hotel in Queenstown is the world's most luxurious ski hotel, according to the 2013 World Luxury Hotel Awards.

Eichardt's beat international brands including Swisstel, InterContinental and Hilton, which compete annually for the top honours.

More than 1000 hotels from 87 countries were nominated to take part in the luxury hotels category this year.

Hotel owner Andrew Cox said it was "a huge honour" to receive the global award which is voted for by international tour operators, travel agents and hotel guests.

"Queenstown has evolved into one of the best ski resorts in the world and to be named the world's best luxury ski resort hotel is not only superb recognition for Eichardt's but also fantastic news for Queenstown and New Zealand tourism in general," he said.

Director of the World Luxury Hotel Awards Marinique de Wet said service excellence was the most critical factor in a hotel's measure as a luxury hotel.
