Christchurch has been named the winner of TripAdvisor's "Top 10 Destinations on the Rise" in the South Pacific.

Though still recovering from the earthquake of February 22, 2011, TripAdvisor said "Christchurch abounds with arts, adventure, and optimism" and described it as "the gateway to the beautiful Canterbury region".

Travellers rated the area for its "dramatic vistas and adventure sports, set against a backdrop of lofty peaks".

In the central city, visitors were impressed by the new and reopening attractions and businesses.

Rotorua claimed fourth place, Dunedin ninth, and Taupo 10th.

Tourism Dunedin chief executive Hamish Saxton said it was "gratifying for Dunedin to receive such recognition".

In the list of overall "top destinations" in the South Pacific, Auckland was the first-ranked New Zealand city at seventh place. Christchurch once again punched above its weight with eighth place.

Havana, Cuba, was the No 1-ranked destination for the Top 10 in the world.

TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, today announced the winners as part of its 2013 Travellers' Choice Awards for Destinations on the Rise.

The awards highlight the 54 global destinations that have seen "the greatest increase in positive traveller feedback and traveller interest".

Influential travel book publisher Lonely Planet last year named Canterbury as a top destination, while a visit to Hanmer ranked No 1 in AA Travel's 101 Must-Do list.
