Australia's great rail journeys
Australia’s vast and diverse landscape absolutely begs to be explored – and a great way to see as much of the country as possible is by rail.
Whether you’re looking for an Outback adventure, a voyage through the rainforest or a glimpse of sparkling sea, you’ll love the offerings to ensure you see the very best of Australia.
Explore the heart of Australia's red centre
The Ghan, operated by Great Southern Rail, is one of the country’s oldest rail routes, having operated for more than 80 years. This three day and two night journey runs between Adelaide and Darwin, offering the perfect opportunity to experience the Red Centre, Australia’s stunning interior.
Choose between different all-inclusive service levels, from twin and single berth sleeper cabins in Gold Service, to private lounge-style accommodation in Platinum Service.
You’ll find plenty of natural wonders to take in on this striking voyage, from South Australia’s Flinders Ranges to the beautiful Katherine Gorge – you’ll even have the chance to experience an off-train excursion into the heart of this stunning river setting.
The highlight, however, is the spectacular fiery sunset over the Red Centre – you won’t see anything like it anywhere else.
This journey also includes a stop in Alice Springs – known to the locals simply as “Alice”. This is about as close as you can get to the centre of Australia and offers brilliant insight into what life is like in a modern Outback community – here you’ll have a choice of three off-train excursions.
Sydney to Perth
Great Southern Rail also operates the Indian Pacific – a luxurious coast-to-coast journey designed to let passengers experience Australia’s vastness.
Like The Ghan, Indian Pacific passengers can travel in either direction and in Gold and Platinum Service cabins. You can begin your journey in sunny Sydney or the lively Western Australia capital of Perth.
This journey is named for the two oceans it passes between – but there’s a lot more to the Indian Pacific than beautiful beaches. The voyage offers inclusive off-train excursions in the Outback towns of Kalgoorlie, Broken Hill and a short stop in Cook.
Passengers also have the opportunity to break their journey up even further with a stop in Adelaide.
From goldfields to ancient desert landscapes and the lush forests of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, the Indian Pacific’s cross-country route offers you the opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of Australia.
Brisbane and Beyond
Queensland is known as Australia’s Sunshine State for good reason – the weather here is simply beautiful, and there are plenty of destinations you’ll want to experience under the sun’s shining rays.
Keen to spend some time in the vibrant city of Brisbane before you explore Queensland’s Tropical North? The Sunlander is the perfect journey for you.
Operated by Queensland Rail, this 32 hour journey takes you between Brisbane and Cairns and offers a true celebration of everything the state has to offer. From history and natural attractions to the striking local cuisine, The Sunlander offers its passengers a hearty slice of Queensland hospitality from beginning to end.
First-class accommodation is available in Queenslander Class, with access to an exclusive fine dining restaurant. Elsewhere onboard, standard single, twin and triple berth sleeping accommodation can also be arranged.
Your journey on The Sunlander covers an astonishing 1,681km – it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget.
Plus, coming in late October is a new train with features that will completely redefine the rail travel experience.
The innovative Railbed Sleepers will be launched, which are similar in look and comfort to premium aircraft seating, including greater legroom and personal on-demand entertainment systems offering music, movies, sport and news – all designed for a more relaxed and comfortable journey. Stay tuned for the launch of this new train.
