Smugshot: Readers' travel photos of the week
Ruth van Seventer
This photo was taken in Sofia, Bulgaria and is of the Old Bath House. The building was completed in 1913 and is now The History Museum of Sofia. I took this photo on my last few days in a city that I had called home for about three months. Sofia became my home away from home, especially in the last few months of 2016. I got to experience the magic of a white winter wonderland.

This photo was taken in at Lake Ballard in Western Australia. Spread over the lake bed are 51 Anthoney Gormley sculptures. Apparently the figures are very stylised versions of the inhabitants of Menzies, the nearest town to Lake Ballard. This is my son Matt studying one of the sculptures. I love the way their two figures mirror each other - almost as if the sculpture is studying him right back.

Looking back at Oban on Stewart Island from Little Bay on Christmas day..... What a wonderful piece of paradise we live in.
On our recent holiday to the Grand Canyon we got to watch the beautiful sunset over this amazing natural wonder. Truly breathtaking.
We spent every night in fales like this in Samoa. The nights are so hot that you can sleep with only a mosquito net around you, lie in bed, and look out at the water. On this morning my friend woke with the sunrise and started the day with a journal entry and meditation. The sand homed many small hermit crabs and the ocean was as warm as bath except full of tropical fish and turtles.
This photo taken in El Born, a bohemian district of Gothic Barcelona, shows three young Spanish sisters obviously bewitched by this wall covered with graffiti.
If you're a train buff, the local trains in Japan will satisfy your urge. I love the way you can stand just behind the driver to the right and get to see some amazing sights and to get great images like that one. We were going to Tokyo and were heading to Yamagata station to connect with the Shinkansen.
This photo was taken late November 2015, a day after my 20th birthday when my girlfriend and I were travelling around southeast Asia. This was a sunset we appreciated on a quiet island in southern Thailand, Ko Lanta. Silhouettes of local fishing boats can be seen in the foreground of one of the most stunning sunsets I have witnessed. Ko Lanta is an untouched gem hidden away from the party ridden islands of Ko Phi Phi. Amiable locals along with spectacular scenery forged an everlasting, utopian memory of this place for me.
This photo was taken during a morning trip to Mingum, Mandalay, Myanmar just before Christmas. You would often see these taxis along the riverbank. Unfortunately I never got to ride in one.
This image was taken on an early morning Sunday run in January, descending Mt Vernon in the Wither Hills on the outskirts of Blenheim, Marlborough. After a night of hectic rain, the skies began to clear and the air was so fresh... yes, it was worth slapping my running shoes on this morning.
