Ask an expert: In search of winter sun
Q. I'm trying to decide between Bali, Thailand and Vietnam for a week-long holiday in the NZ winter. Which would you recommend for a traveller on a modest budget who enjoys beaches, hiking, adventure and food (but isn't big on the party scene)?
Q. Due to the length of your holiday being one week, I would suggest Bali as your destination over Thailand and Vietnam.
To maximise your time there (without long flights or stopovers!) Air New Zealand have flights twice weekly from late May to late September.
Bali is known for offering 'more bang for your Rupiah' – shoppers are spoilt for choice with local markets and world class malls, and food and drinks are also a bargain. Bottled water costs little more than $1 and menu items start from $5 from local warungs where you will be served authentic Balinese cuisine.
Bali also offers a wide range of activity and experiences – with stunning beaches to temples surrounded by jungle, Bali is a land loaded with cultural and natural highlights. On top of that, it is well known for its wellbeing with many affordable massages, spas and wellbeing activities – exactly what most of us need by the time the middle of the year rolls around!
The New Zealand winter tends to be a popular time to travel, so I would recommend booking your trip as soon as you can to take advantage of the great deals that are available to Bali.
