Q. Can you advise some must see/do tips for a seven day visit to Tasmania in January. Regards, Janet.

A. You'll have the opportunity to get a taste of Tasmania's fantastic highlights in seven days.

As an ideal self-drive destination, being half the size of NZ's North Island, base yourself in a region and take your time to really get a taste of the Tasmanian way of life.

There's a lot to fit in, but it's definitely worth seeing it all:

Day 1: Launceston to Tamar Valley: Explore some of Tasmania's finest wineries on the Tamar Valley Wine Route, travel north towards Beauty Point and visit Seahorse World, Platypus House and the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre.

Day 2: Coles Bay to Swansea: Head to the state's East Coast and discover the sheltered beaches of the Freycinet National Park and take-in the breath-taking views of Wineglass Bay.

Day 3-4: Hobart: Drive south to Hobart. En route check out the convict-built Spikey Bridge just south of Swansea or take the ferry at Triabunna to Maria Island.

After arriving in Hobart dine in one of the great restaurants in North Hobart after heading to the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) gallery for the latest exhibitions, wine tastings and more - plus in mid-January you can partake in the MONA FOMA, the largest contemporary annual music festival in Tasmania.

The following day explore Hobart's waterfront by kayak or on a harbour cruise.

Day 5-6: Strahan: Depart Hobart for the West Coast town of Strahan. On the way stop at the historic town of New Norfolk or at the Mt Field National Park.

On the morning of day 6, take a cruise on board a luxury catamaran which will take you into the Gordon River, then venture through the small towns of Rosberry and Tullah where the rugged west coast gives way to the sub-alpine forests of Cradle Mountain.

Day 7: Cradle Mountain to Sheffield: Head North to Sheffield "The Town of Murals" to explore more of Tasmania's North West or catch a flight home from Launceston or Hobart.
