Zealandia makes green hit list

Wellington's Zealandia eco-sanctuary has been named one of the top 75 green tourism companies in the world by a British newspaper.
The 15-year-old conservation attraction, formerly known as Karori Sanctuary, made the The Guardian's Green Travel List 2010, which lists companies worldwide that have shown commitment to community and environment.
Zealandia chief executive Nancy McIntosh-Ward said it was absolutely thrilled to have made the list.
"It's a great recognition of Zealandia's international reputation as a model eco-tourism attraction, and the ground breaking work we have done to bring many of New Zealand's rarest species back to the mainland.
"Being not-for-profit, every single visitor we get makes a real, tangible contribution to New Zealand's natural heritage. Hopefully they also take away a deeper appreciation of our impact on the natural environment."
The Guardian surveyed more than 200 travel and tourism companies worldwide about action taken to reduce carbon impact and promote water conservation, biodiversity conservation and waste management.
A panel of experts read the questionnaires and decided on the final list.
The Wilderness Lodges, a luxury eco-lodge accommodation in the South Island, also made the list, under the small places to stay category.

Didnt even know it had changed its name. Will go one day and see what all the fuss is about...
It's an awesome place to visit. Whining about the $15 admission charge for a day out? - it is great value for money when you think people pay this for 2 hours at the movies. Next thing they will be moaning that they can't take their dogs in there for a walk!
It is more than a bush walk, in fact I'd say the tourism and bush walking aspect is totally secondary to the conservation aims which were to bring back native flora and fauna to Wellington. It's working. However, the facility needs to attract a maximum number of visitors (hence the expensive visitor's centre) who will spend money in order will fund the conservation project. The name is simply branding, who cares what it's called? Props to all involved.
Agree the name change was stupid, and a snub to many of the people who supported it from the start. I love the sanctuary, but have become increasingly dismayed with the millions spent on the stupid visitor centre and other things that aren't wildlife. Decided not to renew my membership when they insisted on photos on the membership cards. I mean come on! It's not a passport. That was the last straw for me.
AaronC #1. There's a world of difference between reputation (generally a third or fourth hand account)and reality. The only reason NZ might be viewed as "Clean and Green" (shudder)is largely due to the expansive use of fertilisers and pesticides. Having lived in rural Canterbury for five years it is quite noticeable that there is a disctinct lack of insect varieties, due to these pesticides. Riverwater too is undrinkable (thanks Fonterra).
Im with Ken, hugely expensive for what amounts to a bush walk.
Great news. But it's still an incredibly stupid name! What on earth was wrong with Karori Wildlife Sanctuary? that's what it is... A wildlife sanctuary in Karori... 'Zealandia' sounds like it was thought up by the people who brought us Zespri. Total twaddle!
Thanks Aaronc #1 but it ain't NZ Farmers dumping the sewage in Auckland & Wellington Harbours and making the beaches unswimmable. Clean up your own backyard. On a positive note, congratulations to Zealandia for giving the same pleasure to others that we get every day from the many tuis that visit our rural property.

75 out of 200? That doesn't sound very exhaustative.

#1 and #7: Relative to most places in the world NZ is very clean and green.
We get over 70% of our energy from renewables.
While our agricultural sector definitely has some down sides, NZ products are less polluting than the same products generated in USA and Europe. It is far greener to eat NZ-made food than US or EU made food.
Sure we're not perfect but we're pretty damn good!
