Emirates will fly the shortest A380 route in the world from Doha to Dubai
It can fly for more than 15,000km, but Emirates have announced they will begin flying an A380 mega-jet on a route only a fraction of that distance.
From December, Emirates will begin flying the shortest A380 route in the world, between Doha, Qatar and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
The flight distance is only 379km, shorter than the distance between Auckland and Wellington (493km).
A one way flight will last for less than an hour. The plane could make almost 20 return flights without refuelling.
The newly announced shortest A380 route will continue to provide the luxurious travel options Emirates' A380s have become known for.
The double-decker plane would be fitted out with flat-bed seats and first class suites on the upper-deck, a company statement said. The lower-deck would accommodate up to 429 economy passengers.
Emirates planned to provide a daily A380 service between Doha and Dubai, the company said.
WORLD'S SHORTEST ROUTE
The route, while being the shortest A380 route, is no contender for the world's shortest route. That title was held by an airline flying the 10-minute, 50 kilometre jaunt between Vienna and Bratislava.
However, in September, a commercial airline announced it would start flying between St Gallen in Switzerland to Friedrichshafen in Germany.
People's Viennaline will open a new route between St Gallen/Altenrhein, Friedrichshafen and Cologne. The first leg of the flight will be under 25km and take about eight minutes, The World of Aviation reported.
The flights will be operated by an Embraer ERJ135.
The world's shortest domestic flight is operated between two villages in the north of Scotland.
The commercial flight between Westray and Papa Westray in the Orkney Islands takes just 47 seconds.
WORLD'S LONGEST ROUTE
Emirates also operates one of the longest routes in the world, with an A380 flying between Dubai and Auckland. The title of the "world's longest flight" was recently snatched by Air India for its revised Delhi to San Francisco route.
Flight AI173 now covers a distance of 15,140 kilometres in 14 hours and 30 minutes, claiming the title from Emirates.
Emirates' Dubai-Auckland route is about 14,120km and takes about 16.5 hours.
