Almost three weeks after its original opening date, the Porters Ski Area has finally been cleared.

The skifield opened today after an avalanche triggered by snow-clearing work damaged infrastructure late last month.

Porters marketing manager Guy Nurse said repairs on the platter lift and T-bar 1 had been completed and recertified yesterday, and crews worked until last night to ready the field for opening.

The Magic Carpet and beginners' area were still closed as they were "basically starting from scratch" to fix the lift. They hoped to have it open by the weekend.

"Our operations crew have just been working every day around the clock when they can. There's been a pretty big effort from those guys to get us to this point," Nurse said.

A fresh layer of snow overnight added to an already ample base depth of between 1 and 2 metres across the mountain.

The fresh dusting meant chains were required on all vehicles.

Porters had rescheduled its opening day from June 21 to June 27 because of last month's snowstorm.

It was then pushed back to July 5 after the avalanche, but the skifield was forced to remain closed as gale-force winds buffeted the mountain and hampered repair efforts.

Customer services manager Hannah Budd said there were plenty of happy people up the mountain this morning.

"We had no snow, then we had too much snow, then we tried to get open and we had a few stability issues," she said.

"We've all been waiting, but we got there eventually."
