It's no mansion, but a flash house doesn't seem necessary when your back yard is the golden sands of the Abel Tasman National Park.

The private beach on Awaroa Inlet is up for sale. While its price is by negotiation, Bayleys salesman Glenn Dick said the current owners were looking at offers from $2 million.

The private property spans 800 metres on land only accessible by air or boat. It has riparian rights, making it a unique sale, said Dick.

A Christchurch man has started a crowd-funding campaign to buy a private beach and gift it to New Zealand.

"The fact that you own the entire beach is pretty unique... it's a big advantage and ensures your privacy," he said.

The property has three buildings - a one-room cabin, a "basic converted wool shed" and an old fishing vessel.

While the simple structures would not suffice as a full-time residence, the beach would make a good getaway, he said.

Buyers from overseas and New Zealand had already expressed interest in the property.

"They're obviously just attracted to the uniqueness of it," he said.

The current owners of the property did not comment on the sale, however Dick said they had other projects around the world to focus on.

"They've enjoyed their time with it and it's time to move on," he said.

The beach's online listing states it is the "best on the planet", and while this comes down to opinion, Dick said it gave other beaches a good nudge by comparison.

"Abel Tasman is one of the prettiest areas in New Zealand and you could physically own part of it."
