I love the beaches of the Catlins, I think because it is not where you would expect lovely golden/white sanded stretches of beautiful coastline. Sure, temperate, tropical waters may be preferred to swim in but that does not mean you can't enjoy a beach if the water is not to your lukewarm liking.

I have spent days on Catlins beaches, looking for penguins and sea-lions, observing dolphins and even whales but best of all just loving the solitude that a stunning pristine environment can provide.

My favourite Catlins beaches are:

- Tautuku (the picture postcard Queen of the Catlins)

- Purakaunui Bay (dramatic cliffs and great surf)

- Porpoise Bay (dolphin and surfers alike love the barrel waves, aka Curio Bay)

There are many, many more. Don't come and see them though, leave them all to me.
