With a new year upon us, it's time to take time out to relax and enjoy what the Nelson region has to offer.

Whether it be relaxing beachside or camping amongst the bush, the ideal holiday differs for everyone. But if there is one thing we can all agree on, surely is that it is that it must include a bit of rest and relaxation.

Nestled in a valley in rural Nelson, this boutique lodge is arguably one of the most luxurious in the region.

Set in the Orinoco Valley on fifty acres of land the lodge is complete with a helipad for those wanting to arrive by air. Guests have the choice of a luxury suite or two-bedroom garden cottage. Pre-dinner drinks, canapes and a three-course meal are included in the $1440 per night price for a luxury suite.

For a taste of luxury in the wilderness, Westhaven Lodge in Golden Bay is situated on a privately owned 1000 acre peninsula on the north western tip of the South Island.

Hidden atop a ridgeline, the luxury suites boast views across the Kahurangi National Park and the Whanganui Inlet, areas both rich with diverse wildlife.

Guests have a wealth of facilities at their disposal and can choose to relax with a hydrotherapy spa, infrared sauna or by taking a dip in the indoor lap pool.

With a price tag of $1280 per night for the luxury suite, guests are fully catered for with a buffet breakfast, packed picnic lunch, homemade afternoon tea and a four-course dinner.

As you would expect for a retreat, meditation, yoga and life coaching are on offer along with adventure activities for more active guests.

Located on a shoreline overlooking the Waimea Inlet, this family owned estate is home to a coastal vineyard and apple orchard. 

Accommodation options include a range of different homestead suites or the self-contained Te Koi private villa. At $1200 per night for a couple, Te Koi sleeps up to five guests and the rate includes a gourmet breakfast.

The Resurgence, Motueka

For those interested in eco-friendly accommodation, The Resurgence, situated between two national parks is luxury eco-accommodation at it's finest.

A luxury suite in the Bush Lodge will set you back $925 per night, which includes a cooked breakfast and four-course dinner, showcasing the best of local produce with much of it grown in the lodge's organic garden.

Guests can relax in a claw foot tub while listening to birdsong in Kahurangi National Park. A large number of native birds can be heard at Resurgence and birding day trips are available for those wanting to get closer to the feathered creatures. 

There are more than 5 kilometres of walking tracks around a lodge through regenerating bush and a one-hour return trip will take you to the source of the Riwaka river, the resurgence with water emerges from the marble hillside in a deep pool. 

Not to be outdone when it comes to therapeutic treatments; massage, reflexology and aromatherapy are also on offer for guests.
