Sixty-three domestic flights in and out of Auckland were cancelled today because of thick fog, Auckland airport says.

An airport spokesman said fog restrictions imposed last night were lifted at 11.25 am and while there were cancelled flights, early this afternoon another 11 domestic flights were delayed.

Two international flights were diverted.

A China Southern flight from Guangzhou due at 6am was diverted to Christchurch and finally landed in Auckland at 12.46pm.

A private plane from Melbourne was diverted to Wellington.

Although the fog was expected to lift, parts of Auckland were still shrouded in it.

"There's a lot of low-level moisture," Metservice duty forecaster Philippa Murdoch said

"We've had a lot of cool temperature and light winds condense to fogs."

The fog was expected to completely clear this afternoon.

The fog also delayed ferry services on the Waitemata Harbour.
