A man with a metal hip has unwittingly created a security scare at Brisbane airport, causing minor delays and forcing hundreds of passengers to be screened twice.

Qantas says the man was pulled aside for secondary tests after his artificial hip set off metal detectors at about 9.30am (local time) today, but wandered off.

A Qantas spokeswoman said all passengers in the terminal, numbering in the hundreds, had to go through security again.

"It has caused minor delays, but we've almost rescreened everyone now," she said.

The spokeswoman said some flights were delayed by up to 15 minutes as a result of the scare.
