An early morning fire at Wellington International Airport started in the ceiling of the Koru Club lounge.

Fire communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said the small fire started just before 5am and triggered the sprinkler system in the Koru Club.

Nobody was injured but the few people in the airport would have been evacuated.

At the peak of the Fire Service's response, five engines plus an aerial unit and a command unit were at the scene.

The cause of the fire was unknown.
