A video of a drunk tourist charging toward a wild elephant has gone viral, causing tens of thousand of people to marvel at his stupidity.

YouTube footage shot at Africa's Kruger National Park, shows a western man stumble out of a vehicle and rush at a wild elephant, which fortunately runs away.

The man was being encouraged and laughed at by his group of friends.

Although the elephant eventually decided to run away, the outcome could easily have been tragic.

Elephants have been known to kill humans and commentators were concerned the elephant would have been put down if it had decided to fight back.

Comments on the video-sharing site expressed outrage at the man's antics, saying the death of the elephant would have been the real tragedy.

It has been viewed more than 38,000 times.
